From MSNBC: Time to Rewrite the Nations Marijuana Laws & A CARE Medical Group Commentary

Upon watching the following video, stated with such passion by Mr. Lawrence O’Donnell of MSNBC on his segment “The Last Word”, I wanted to share it with our patients and viewer, as it closely represents our views. We obviously believe here at The CARE Medical Group that the use of Medical Marijuana should be legalized and regulated in all states. We must remember though that the criminalization and current classification of cannabis as a Schedule I drug at the federal level will continuously prevent thorough research and proper regulation needed for states to bring about clear laws and measures of enforcement.
There is no doubt that the drug war has failed. Billions upon billions of dollars have been wasted in a vain effort to stop the flow, decrease use, or scare people from ever trying marijuana. We have filled our jails and prisons with non-violent offenders, which costs billions for housing. Those convicted have lessened their chances for prosperous careers, as they may lose access to student aid, state or federal jobs, just to mention a few of the long term ‘side-effects’ of the damage done by the war on drugs. Why is that when we see that several previous US Presidents along with current President Obama have used marijuana and/or other illegal drugs. Many members of congress, CEO’s, and other leaders, along with millions of productive and successful Americans have used marijuana without short or long term damaging effects. Just as alcohol and other drugs are not for everyone or can cause individual issues, we understand that there is risks for some who may use marijuana (although research consistently shows that marijuana use is safer than alcohol and most drugs). Education, research, regulation, and alternative treatment is the moral and ethical way to ‘fight’ drug abuse. Dependency and addiction is a mental and physical health issue, not a criminal one, and should be treated accordingly.
